The Buildings of Charley
The Parish of Charley has neither shop, public library or
public house but can still boast several buildings of merit and interest
within its boundaries, some of which were built following the Enclosure
of Charnwood Forest in the early 1800’s. Those awarded grants of
land under the Enclosure Act built substantial houses for themselves and
cottages and farm buildings for their farm workers. In general these latter
buildings have survived while the ‘great’ houses, for a variety
of reasons, have been demolished. The twentieth century saw the modernisation
and upgrading of most of the cottages resulting in desirable homes scattered
throughout the parish and commanding the upper price range of the housing
market.
